in sew much need of help

This was George, he is still a good little blanket. However, now he looks like this.

And, he is in dire need of some help.

He's developing tiny rips and holes so fast, I don't think he'll make it through another wash at this point.

What should I do?

One friend has recommended running a sewing machine back and forth over the parts that have opened up (we just opened Katie's Hello Kitty sewing machine this weekend, we'll have to get to that in another post).

Another friend recommended possibly patching the areas with material.

Seriously though, my dear friends who sew -- input PLEASE!

Retire it for a brand new... Mo-chosen fabric, new one? That, or see if you can find that fabric to make it magically new again... Not sure if it's really fixable.

we have a "back up" George that Miyo made, but she insists on "old George" so this would be my last ditch attempt at saving "old George"

Hmmm, I would say patches are the best way to go. There is this stuff called fine fuse, quilters use it when they have an old quilt with rips that they want to save.

It so hard to say good bye to old friends. These kinds of wears are the hardest to fix.

I will keep my eye out and email my mom too. She's been sewing for years.

It does indeed look very well loved... I think if it were me I would rip out the side seam in a short section, large enough to put iron fusing between the two layers, then sew the seem back together and then add exterior patches only on the very worst of the tears but that might not be necessary with the fusing and I would decide about the patches after looking at it. The fusing should make it last longer but I think it will be a bit stiffer, which she may not be too happy about. If you want to try this I can do it with you or for you during a playdate.

I have an idea for the transition from old George to New George. You could tack (sewing term to stitch in one spot) the old one and the new one together at the corners for awhile, so that it wasn't like she was saying goodbye to old george while she was making friends with new george...

I have to say, Mo's love of the George blanket is just too cute!

Maybe contact a local quilting guild in your area and see if they can help. Possibly quilting George onto a new backing and at the same time patching the holes. My Aunt has a huge quilting machine that she's able to do really amazing things with. If it's just worn at the edges it could be patched by putting a whole new binding around the edge. Or perhaps incorporating the old George into a whole new George blanket. My Aunt is regularly hired to do does piece work if you're interested I can give you her contact info...

I like the quilting idea. But I am clueless when it comes to sewing. Maybe keep the rips for that awesome en vogue vintage look, just kidding...

i bought zoe this book about this little girl that had a favorite dress that got too small for her, so she turned it into a shirt, and then that got too small, so it became socks etc etc..

would you go that route?
