decelerating

Yesterday was a busy day for the Little Wickies.

It started with swim class, then there was a baby shower at our house. The day continued with a birthday party in the afternoon and finished with a basketball game at the local high school where our friend Laura showed some young'ins at the alumni game that she's still got it.

Today, we slowed the pace down. We explored, took our time, we looked at things closely.

We did a little hike this morning.

Played with sticks.
And, climbed some trees.

Then, while Maddie napped, Katie and I headed out to meet some friends to check out "negative low tide" at Mondos.

We poked around and examined shells and the little things that live inside them as well as this "squirter" animal.

Sometimes slow days are good days...

some jobs have rough hours

"Mama, Jesus don't sleep."

"Um, he doesn't?"

"No, he has to help people all over the world. He has lots of things to do."

"Sounds like a busy job."

Yeh, sometimes he don’t come home at night. He has a special job like firefighters do, they don’t always get to come home and sleep at home either.”

feeling old

Scene: In the car listening to music

Papa: When did this song come out?

Mama: I don't know, it's pretty old though I had a mixed tape with this song on it.

Katie (piping in from the backseat): We ran out of tape at school... I can do tape all by myself now...

blue

One of my favorite antique shops is closing so I bid it farewell this week. I've had my eye on this suitcase for awhile. It's pretty much my favorite color -- so, I splurged and got it for myself.

It came as a set. I plan on using the smaller piece for our weekend trips to the Bay Area. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the bigger piece.

Katie is always picking me little flowers, so I also picked up these cute little bud vases that are now sitting on my window sill.

I really enjoy looking through everything. Which is funny, because I don't really like sorting through items when I shop for clothes.

I love that things as adorable as this...

Are literally next to things like this...

I fell in love with these little needlepoint cars. If I had a boy, I would have snapped them up in a minute.

I almost, almost got them for Maddie's room.

She does have a thing for cars -- maybe I'll sneak back out again.

here fishy, fishy

Today we went to see lots and lots of...

fish at the local hatchery.

Mama, missed the part of the email that said to bring dimes for fish food, but luckily the other mommies had some change to spare (thanks!)

The little ones got cups but no fish food. I was afraid Maddie would find the temptation too great and taste the little nibbley bits.

Instead, the babies did things like sit smack in the middle of the dirty hatchery...

And, explored other questionably safe/sanitary equipment...

(don't want to even think about what goes in and out of that tube -- yelch)

Just outside of the hatchery netting there were dozens upon dozens of these beautiful white birds which we watched.

And in the end, after the dimes ran out, the kids finished the day doing what they do best...

just call her busta-rhyme

Katie is way into rhyming. We'll see a dog and immediately Katie breaks into, "Dog, bog, cog, fog."

Multiple times we've seen trash trucks and she starts in with, "Truck, buck, duck..."

Sometimes she goes systematically through the alphabet, other times she just skips around making up words.

For some reason she hasn't reached "f" in this scenario. I'm sure it will happen soon enough.

I will do my very best not to laugh.

No promises though.

trick or treat

Halloween was a fun night for the Little Wickies.

Maddie the Lion, Cinder-Olivia-Newton-ella and her pals had fun.

The lion fell in love with the lamb.

"Days are short now, just like Maddie is."
